FC Barcelona can set more records besides winning the league

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said this with the conviction of a face-to-face fight. Courtois was asked after last night’s 2-1 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico if Real had any chance of winning the league this season. Barca is at the top with 12 points difference with arch rivals.

Real can turn around this gap? But analysts do not see that possibility. Courtois accepted this reality with a hard jaw, ‘Yes, the truth must be accepted (not winning the league). We never give up. But the gap is already four matches (12 points). Nothing is impossible. But the truth is that the work is very difficult.

How hard is it? The statistics say that Real will have to change history to win the league by closing this 12-point gap. And Barca have to write a new history of bad games from this stage of the league. Let’s be clear. Barca is at the top of the league table with 68 points in 26 matches. Real Madrid with 56 points in the equal match.

Two teams will play 12 more matches in the league. Just as no team from here in the Spanish La Liga has ever won the championship by 12 points, no team has ever lost the title at the end of the season from the top by 12 points.

Barca set a record in the 2012–13 season. That season, Pep Guardiola’s Barca won the league by 15 points with the second team in the points table. The Catalan club set the league record for the highest points margin with the second-placed team in the same season. Guardiola’s team became the second team in the history of La Liga to get 100 points.

Both Barca and Real have played 26 matches so far this season. Spanish media “AS” made a calculation – if both teams continue at this rate, Barça will win the league by 17 points at the end of the season.

This calculation is done by taking the average points per match of the two teams and multiplying it by the total number of matches (38 each) in the season. If the two teams continue like this, then Barca will set a new record for winning the league with the highest points margin at the end of the season (with the second team in the table).

Barca won 22 out of 26 matches played this season. They drew 2 matches and lost the other two. La Liga holds the record for most wins in a season at 32—Real achieved this in the 2011–12 season and Barca in the 2012–13 season. In other words. Barca has a chance to rewrite that record. However, Barça will probably set the record for the lowest number of goals conceded in a season.

Xavi’s team has conceded only 9 goals in 26 matches so far. Deportivo La Coruna and Atlético Madrid hold the record for the fewest goals conceded in a La Liga season after a 38-match season. Deportivo in the 1993–94 season and Atlético in the 2015–16 season set the record by conceding just 18 goals. Barca can take this record within the 12 matches in hand.
